The following case studies below are to give you a feel of the services we can provide and help you with.

1)Referred by Victim Support

 

Client was subject to Domestic Abuse from son.

 

 

Safe and Secure

Client still in property where the assault took place. Very frightened that son would return. Physical violence in relationship with son which has continued over many years. Concerns that son would be aggressive to father, financially abusive and damage property should he return. There are issues over tenancy.

Additional home security, bogus button installed into property, completed application for housing with RSL offer of accommodation away from area of concern, new tenancy commenced, support with help completing benefit forms and other changes to circumstance forms. Support with change to Doctors, benefits etc.  Work carried out via outreach.

Economic Wellbeing

Client had problems with rent arrears and also Council Tax arrears due to fleeing property following most recent assault.

Little or no support from Local Authority, client unable to deal with the task in hand due to illness.

Work carried out with Local Authority and Housing department with regards to issues around resettlement, letters sent to Housing Benefit to appeal against decisions made on benefits.    

General Health and Wellbeing

Client in process of tests and assessment for several health issues. Very low self esteem with tendency to self harm and attempted suicide.

Clients wellbeing has increased, more relaxed in new surroundings. Arrangements made for prescription to continue at new Doctors.     

Enjoy & Achieve

To be able to move on from abusive relationship with son, to make contact and continued contact with daughter, who was supportive of client. To feel strong enough to leave property and carry out daily tasks without concerns of meeting up with son.

Excellent relationship with daughter who continues to support father and visit every 2/3 days. Enjoying going to meet with daughter and do shopping. No contact from son.

 

2)Self referral

 

Client has experienced physical and psychological abuse from wife since the birth of their first child (now two years old). Wife has issues around alcohol dependency and violence escalates following the use of alcohol. Client has been arrested on a couple of occasions following allegations from wife- no action taken by police. Client has left the family home and is currently staying with family members.   

Safety and Security

Client continues to visit the family home daily to take care of his child putting him in a vulnerable position with regard to further allegations being made against him. Client receives verbally abusive calls from wife.

Support around understanding abusive behaviours and how to identify and manage potentially risk situations. Development of strategies to deal with abusive communications, either face to face or via text/phone. Prevention work around conflict mediation and diffusion.   

Economic Wellbeing

Unable to finance temporary accommodation due to financing family home.

Supported to explore options available with regard to housing.   

General Health and Wellbeing

Client is experiencing high levels of anxiety and stress due to being separated from his family.

Emotional support around loss and confusion. Work around understanding the short and long term impact of domestic abuse.  

Children’s issues

Client struggles to maintain relationship with child. Client concerns about leaving child in care of his wife when she is drinking. Poor relationship with Social Care who are presently supporting wife’s allegations of DV.

Support to engage with Social Care, advocacy and liaison. Support around healthy parenting.   

Enjoy and Achieve

Wishes to rebuild relationship with wife. Continue to develop positive relationship with child. Reduce impact of domestic abuse on work life, re-establish previous unblemished work record.

Support around healthy parenting. Support around health relationships.

 

 

3)Family/friend referral

                        

Client had been subjected to physical violence from mother and sustained injury to his ear drum. There was a degree of emotional and psychological abuse over many years. Client had fled parents home and had moved in with friends, who were very supportive of him.   

Safety and Security.

Providing own accommodation in supported scheme. Discussing issues around relationship with parents. Discussing issues around relationship with girlfriend’s parents.

Completed application for housing, client was offered 1 bed flat in supported housing scheme. Help with completing benefit forms, and securing a bank account.   

Economic Wellbeing

Support required with benefits.  Client felt unable to continue with college due to lack of finances and no income. Client had no proof of identity was unable to source benefits or open Bank Accounts.

Placement at college secured for next term. Birth certificates found at General Register Office copies obtained to allow client to apply for benefits.

Money sourced from charitable organisation for college uniform and books etc.     

General Health and Wellbeing

Client was withdrawn to start with and showed signs of anxiety towards situation. Missed sister as unable to make contact. Continued verbally abuse from mother over telephone. All items belonging to clients were destroyed by mother.

Emotional support during one–to–one session with regards to healthy relationships, breaking cycle of abuse. Contact made with sister and support to maintain safe contact but without causing further family problems both for client and sister.   

Enjoy and Achieve

Client wanted to continue on courses at college but felt unable

too.

Applied for funding and client now signed up for a further year at College.   

Positive contributions

Client felt that the service provided to him during his time with Derbyshire SAM had so greatly helped him that he took part in promoting the service by providing an interview for local radio and for appearing on local television news broadcast.

 

 

4)Crisis Team Referral

 

Client had been subjected to Domestic abuse from a long term partner, the abuse had been on going for many years, it had left client with low esteem and he had attempted suicide. History of abusive relationship with own father. Client had lost job and had little hope for his future.

 

Safety and Security.

No issues client had move back home to live with family. Continued to receive numerous texts on a regular basis from ex partner both abusive and threatening.

Project supported client in developing strategies to deal with abusive text/calls from ex. Explored the nature of relationship with his father and supported to develop safe, healthy coping mechanisms for this   

Economic Wellbeing

Client was receiving benefits but was still providing child support to mother of his child from past relationship. This was not appropriate on the benefit he was receiving, issues with debt on previous rented accommodation. Tenancy issues with previous accommodation.

Client was supported in terminating any responsibility for previous tenancy and help was given over benefits and subsequent financial impact.   

General Health and wellbeing.

Client had very low self esteem and confidence. Client taking medication for depression.

Client utilised a mixture of drop in and one to one sessions on an almost daily basis to receive support. He was then later referred for counselling  

Children’s Issues

Client continues to have contact with son, although he feels unable to have overnight stays, he is also unable to maintain long periods of time with his son as he becomes very tired.

Client’s relationship with son improved over time in line with an improvement in him self. The period of time spent with his son increased until he was able to spend a day at the seaside with his. Overnight access was still a problem due to his accommodation issues.   

Enjoy and Achieve

Clients wanted to change career and find a job that he would find more rewarding. Client also wanted to get fit again both physically and emotionally

Client was assisted to complete several job applications whilst attending the project. Work was done around his CV. Client obtained work in the later stages of the project. This then gave him a huge confidence lift.

He was also able to start socialising again due to his new found confidence.   

Positive contributions

Client was supportive of the Derbyshire SAM project he gave constructive input into our advertising information. He also appeared on several programmes encouraging men to come forward and talk about issues that may be affecting them.

 

 

5)Job Centre/CBT Referral

 

Client had history of physical and sociological abuse resulting in client serving prison sentence and competing programme.

 

Safety and Security.

Work with client has been around safety and security within relationships, client in fear of developing new relationship and fear of allegations.

Work on-to-one basis dealing with sensitive issues regarding perpetrator and victim behaviour, obsession about the work carried out by course that he attended, safety planning both emotional and physical around current relationship.   

Economic Wellbeing

Client on benefit and keen to get back to work after a prolonged spell of unemployment which was a result of low self esteem and bullying at work.

Worked with client around self care and impact of Domestic Abuse on him to gain confidence. Client recently attended interview. Help prior to interview on what to expect how to deal with interview situation what may be asked.   

General Heath and Wellbeing

Emotional very low, lacked in confidence confused about relationship issues and past situations. Physical health issues which maybe part of the stress that he is living with.

Validating his experience and helping him to understand what has happened understanding the long term impact of this. Worked with client to identify abusive behaviour traits. Support around establishing own personal boundaries.   

Enjoy and achieve

Client wishes to return to work on a regular basis. Keen to access refreshment training.

Client continues to work hard to understand his situation; he regularly attends on a weekly basis to the project. He continually aims to achieve a better understanding of Abusive relationships.
